A search engine helps you find information online. Google's Search also includes AI features that generate answers, rather than only pointing you toward sources.

That difference matters when teachers want students to investigate answers themselves.

Google announced new controls for K-12 student accounts, not a Search shutdown happening today. Under the upcoming changes, schools will need to enable services that default to off.

The backlash followed Google's explanation that schools rejecting AI altogether would lose Google Search access. Chris Phillips, Google's vice president for education, told The New York Times that "Search and AI are deeply integrated," TechCrunch reports.

Google then clarified that schools can enable Search separately from Gemini products. But that does not mean AI-free Search: its built-in AI features remain.

The useful distinction: switching off a chatbot is not the same as removing AI from Search. Before rollout, schools can check exactly what each control disables and decide whether it fits their teaching rules.
