The real news
The story, straight
In our cartoon, the graduate brings backup: a robot in a fitted suit, wedged in the interview doorway with both shoulders against the frame.
That is the shape of a claim a panellist made at about 5:45 into Moonshots #306: some firms are increasing graduate hiring because of the artificial intelligence (AI) skills young applicants bring. It is 1 anecdote from that exchange, and an anecdote is not a hiring study.
Unemployment means being without work, actively looking for work and available to start. The labour force is everyone working plus everyone unemployed and looking.
Youth unemployment is that measure taken across the 15-to-24 labour force, so it is not a share of all young people. Students who neither work nor seek work sit outside the labour force; students who do work are counted.
Seasonally adjusted, which strips out the recurring calendar patterns that move hiring every year, youth unemployment in August 2026 was 20.6% in France, 20.3% in Italy and 22.7% in Spain, according to Eurostat.
Overall unemployment for ages 15 to 74, a group that includes those same young workers, was 8.2%, 6.2% and 10.0%.
Those figures measure youth unemployment. They do not measure graduate hiring, and they say nothing about what AI does to it.
The practical part is smaller than the headline. An applicant can show one task they completed with AI, a summary, a draft, a spreadsheet formula or a first attempt at a fix, and explain how they checked it.
That is a demonstration of work a 22-year-old can put in front of an interviewer this week, and it is the honest version of the robot in this cartoon.
The applicant can demonstrate the work. Somebody still has to widen the door.
The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
The graduate brought AI to help land the job. The carpenter might get hired first.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
Youth unemployment, share of the 15-24 labour force, seasonally adjusted, August 2026: France 20.6%, Italy 20.3%, Spain 22.7%. All ages 15-74: 8.2%, 6.2%, 10.0% (Eurostat).
The upside
Why it could matter
Show one task you completed with AI and explain how you checked it.
