An umbrella keeps rain off people. The Commonwealth connects countries so they can work together.

Charles joined those ideas after discovering that being King does not make you waterproof.

On Sunday 1 November 2026, torrential rain caught him at a cricket stadium during Antigua and Barbuda's independence celebrations. Footage showed him raising his arms and calling for an umbrella.

The Independent says it had been seen around the world; it reports no viewing total.

The punchline came later, not in the downpour. At a dinner at the Blue Waters hotel in St John's on Tuesday 3 November, Charles joked about Commonwealth countries whose citizens believe they enjoy perfect weather all year.

Then he said: "Although perhaps part of my role as Head of the Commonwealth is to provide an umbrella for you all."

The Independent reports laughter and applause. A wet arrival had become dinner material.
