The story, straight
The future has arrived. Please take a number.
A CPU is a computer's general-purpose processor: it runs instructions and coordinates work. Graphics processors handle many calculations together, making them useful for AI.
But AI services still need general computing work done. Buying the flashy chips does not remove every other limit.
Notebookcheck reports that Intel is shifting some manufacturing capacity from consumer processors toward server chips. Demand for its Xeon 6 processors already exceeds supply.
Intel expects shortages to remain particularly severe in the first half of 2027, with additional capacity expected later.
Lil'meme has therefore joined the world's least exciting launch queue: a queue for the parts that let the launch happen.
On Moonshots, a guest argued that roughly 1 AI agent per person could make CPUs the next bottleneck, with the CPU buildout lagging by 2 to 3 years. That is a bet, not an established global shortage forecast.
A panelist countered that stronger models could reduce the need for large groups of agents. Intel's supply squeeze does not settle that argument.
The useful lesson: an AI agent, software that carries out tasks, still depends on physical computers. Better software could reduce the hardware needed; more manufacturing could increase supply.
Neither arrives just because someone clicks upgrade.

The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
Even the future has to take a number.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
CPUs handle general computing tasks. AI services need those tasks done too.
The upside
Why it could matter
Intel is expanding capacity, but factories cannot download an upgrade.
