The story, straight
A good team should keep working when its leader leaves the room. Build that team, then tackle something new.
That is the idea behind some spectacularly alarming career advice at Stellantis, the company behind Jeep, Ram and Chrysler.
Ned Curic, Stellantis’ Chief Engineering & Technology Officer, told Fortune that “the best thing that you can do for your career is to make yourself redundant.” He described getting teams into good shape, leaving and starting something new.
Crucially, he said the company must make sure those people have another opportunity.
So, no: this is not an announcement that AI is replacing Stellantis’ engineers. Fortune also reports that Curic told Bloomberg in October that Stellantis planned to add “multiple hundreds” of engineers in Europe and the US this year.
Lil’meme has arrived for the interview with a résumé and a shredder. Apparently ambition now comes with a paper-jam warning.
The AI connection is about changing the work. AI tools can help produce code or analyze engineering data; engineers still need to check the results.
Faster output does not automatically mean trustworthy output. A calculator can save you arithmetic.
It cannot decide whether you asked the right question.
The useful takeaway: make the old task less dependent on you, not your next paycheck less likely. Curic’s philosophy depends on leaders providing somewhere worthwhile to go next.
Otherwise, “career development” is just a disappearing act with a lanyard.

The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
Recruiting engineers to outgrow their jobs.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
Build teams that run without you; move to new work.
The upside
Why it could matter
More opportunity, if leaders deliver it.
