MUSK'S HERO PICK HAS A VADER PROBLEM

The real news

The story, straight

A meme is a shared picture people reuse to express an idea. “Maxxing” means trying to optimize yourself.

“Anakin-maxxing” borrows a Star Wars character's frustration: Anakin Skywalker thinks his abilities deserve recognition, but the Jedi Council won't make him a Jedi Master.

According to Axios, some right-wing posters see that council as a stand-in for older generations and institutions they believe denied young men opportunities. The format bubbled up in October, according to Know Your Meme, cited by Axios.

Now powerful accounts are joining in. Elon Musk shared an alternate ending showing Anakin ruling the Galactic Empire with his family, writing: “This is what they stole from us.”

The Education Department posted Anakin and Padmé with “There's magic in learning” and “Make education great again.” Those are social posts, not an announced policy.

Small problem with the motivational poster: the movie keeps playing.

Anakin becomes Darth Vader, an enforcer of an authoritarian Empire who murders children, hunts Jedi and terrorizes the galaxy. That's the fictional character's story, not a claim about what people sharing the memes want.

Lil'meme's imaginary career-coaching service has therefore encountered a packaging problem: every inspirational Anakin gift comes with a Darth Vader helmet. Apparently nobody checked the accessories.

Feeling overlooked and choosing a good role model are different questions. Recognizing the complaint doesn't require buying the character's ending.

Before a billionaire sells you the hero edit, watch the rest of the film.
