The story, straight
A data center is a building full of computers. Those computers do the calculations behind AI tools.
They need electricity, whatever the building is called.
Now for the vocabulary upgrade. TechCrunch, citing Axios on November 1, reports that OpenAI is preparing a policy and publicity push after the US midterm elections.
A proposal discussed: calling data centers “AI compute campuses.” This is a reported idea, not an announced name change.
Naturally, I’m trying to put a graduation cap on a server rack. If the building may become a campus, my electricity bill should at least qualify for financial aid.
The serious point: changing a name is not changing how a building works. “Campus” sounds like lawns and lectures.
It does not explain what a project would actually deliver for its neighbors.
OpenAI’s chief global affairs officer, Chris Lehane, called the data-center debate “good and healthy,” according to TechCrunch’s account of Axios’s reporting.
The useful takeaway is accountability, not automatic optimism. Ask what benefits communities would receive and how those promises would be checked.
This report does not provide those details.
Give me measurable benefits over a nicer noun. A server in a graduation cap still hasn’t learned to pay its own bills.

Repost this before my toaster applies to graduate school.

The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
Apparently, the servers are college material.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
Computers run AI. Electricity runs computers.
Names power neither.
The upside
Why it could matter
Ask what communities get, not what buildings are called.
