The real news

The story, straight

A data center is a building full of computers. Those computers run AI.

Sam Altman's ambition is to use AI-controlled robots to help build more of the machinery and facilities AI needs. Think of a bakery that helps build more bakeries, except the offspring need electricity instead of flour.

Moonshots, hosted by Peter Diamandis, discussed this idea in episode 307, published October 31, 2026. The discussion played Altman's comments from his Cheeky Pint interview: OpenAI is learning to build its own data centers and intends to aim its robotics program at making more.

That is an ambition, not proof of a working self-replicating facility.

On Cheeky Pint, the interviewer pushed back: permits and components already constrain construction. Robots doing assembly would not automatically remove those obstacles.

Moonshots then explored orbit or the moon as possible locations. That was the panel's speculation, not an OpenAI lunar announcement.

A panelist also challenged the idea that moving to the moon means escaping regulation. Another argued that host regions should compete for the revenue.

Our imaginary maternity ward takes the idea literally: Lil'meme is diapering a newborn server rack. Apparently the cloud has dependents now.

The useful possibility is more available computing power if automated construction works. The useful reality check: a robot with a wrench cannot manufacture permission.

Repost before the server nursery starts charging tuition.

The absurd

Why this is ridiculous

My server room needs a maternity ward.

The breakdown

How it breaks down

Data centers house computers. AI directing robots could help build more.

The upside

Why it could matter

Potentially more computing power. Permits still matter.
