Think of a usage allowance as lunch money: what either assistant uses can leave less for the other.

Starting in December, ChatGPT and Codex will share an allowance on Plus, Pro and Business. OpenAI has not published an exact December start date or a token allowance for each plan.

Tokens are pieces of information a model processes or generates. More advanced models and harder tasks generally use more of the allowance.

Instant chat will not draw from it. So the everyday conversation stays outside the lunch fund; the complicated homework brings a straw.

Why combine the budget? OpenAI says it is bringing Work's task-doing capabilities into regular ChatGPT.

BleepingComputer reports that a combined Chat/Work test will start with a small group in the coming weeks. Codex remains a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.

The useful part: Settings > Usage will show combined remaining usage and reset times. Reach the limit and you can wait, upgrade, or buy credits for eligible features.

Use that meter before assuming separate apps mean separate budgets.
