The real news

The story, straight

Borrow money and the lender wants to know: will you repay it? A credit rating helps lenders judge that risk.

A riskier rating usually means higher interest and fewer willing lenders. "Junk" is a borrowing-risk category, not a bankruptcy announcement.

Now for the velvet-rope rubbish bin.

The Financial Times reported on October 30, as covered by TechCrunch, that Blackstone expects Anthropic to receive a rating in the double-B range after its initial public offering, when shares first become available to public investors.

That's the highest tier within speculative grade, commonly called junk.

Premium junk. Finally, a bin with bottle service.

Blackstone previously expected an investment-grade rating, indicating lower lending risk, before 2027. Its reported expectation has changed.

That is a forecast, not an awarded rating or a downgrade. Anthropic and Blackstone declined to comment to TechCrunch.

In our imaginary lending lounge, Lil'meme installs a velvet rope around an Anthropic-branded rubbish bin and waits for cheaper interest. Unfortunately, upholstery is not a repayment plan.

Why care? A company can make impressive technology while lenders still worry about financing its spending.

Product quality and borrowing risk answer different questions.

The useful move: read what a rating measures, and distinguish predictions from decisions. A fancy entrance doesn't make the loan cheaper.

The absurd

Why this is ridiculous

Apparently, even junk has a VIP section.

The breakdown

How it breaks down

Ratings judge repayment risk. Riskier borrowers usually pay more interest.

The upside

Why it could matter

Check borrowing risk, not just the sales pitch.
