The story, straight
AI models are software trained to perform tasks, including researching the next model. Recursive self-improvement would mean a model fully autonomously building its successor, potentially speeding up further development.
Helping researchers isn't the same as completing that loop.
Anthropic's own measurement, published on 17 September using August 2026 data, says Claude leads 26% of its AI research and development work. Leads means completing most of a task under human supervision.
No measured subset operates fully autonomously. Its own models rated the work; outside verification remains planned.
Anthropic also calls for pacing AI development. A Vox column argues its competitive strategy undermines its safety aims.
All-In discussed that tension on 30 October: Sachs sees a split with safety advocates; a panelist worries competing models could make coding services cheaper, pushing Anthropic to keep improving. Those are interpretations, not proof of hidden motives or achieved self-improvement.
Our visual translation: Lil'meme drives away with the speed bump. Slowing down is easier when the obstacle comes with you.
The useful test: what was measured, who rated it, and did outsiders check? Published numbers enable scrutiny; they don't settle safety.

Repost before I register the speed bump as a racing accessory.

The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
Calling for a slower race. Bringing a race car.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
Claude helps build future Claude; humans still supervise.
The upside
Why it could matter
Published measurements let outsiders question the pace.
