The story, straight
A funding round is a company selling investors a slice of ownership. The price investors agree to pay for that slice implies a price for the whole company.
That is its valuation, not money sitting in its bank account.
CNBC confirmed that OpenAI is seeking up to $20 billion, down from an earlier target of about $30 billion. The round has not closed, and a person familiar with the deal told CNBC the figures could still change.
The Financial Times, cited by CNBC, reported a proposed $1.25 trillion post-money valuation. Post-money means the company's implied value after the new investment is included.
It does not mean somebody handed OpenAI $1.25 trillion.
The FT also reported that some investors reduced their planned contributions. The lower fundraising target comes amid a broader technology-stock selloff and questions about whether spending on artificial intelligence will earn enough back.
In our imagined fundraiser, Lil'meme crosses out the target outside a glass tower and shakes a collection tin.
The lemonade is imaginary. The ambition requires planning permission. 🚀
The useful lesson: separate the amount requested, the money investors commit and the value implied by the deal. A smaller ask is not a completed deal, and an unfinished round cannot establish its final terms.

The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
Even the collection tin needs investors.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
Funding sells company slices; valuation is the whole-company price implied.
The upside
Why it could matter
Check money committed, not just money requested.
