A convincing answer isn't necessarily a correct answer. In mathematics, a proof must show why each step works, not just arrive at an impressive conclusion.
A language model can generate candidate reasoning quickly. Researchers still have to check it.
Imagine homework arriving faster than anyone can mark it, except the homework might change science.
On the Cheeky Pint podcast, Sam Altman described an internal OpenAI Slack channel called “Model Name-Hold My Beer.” Employees threw extremely difficult problems at models to test their limits.
That's a channel nickname, not a released product.
“Hold my beer” is an ambitious research atmosphere. Lil'meme brought a coaster.
Apparently he needed a mathematics department.
The distinction matters: producing mathematical results and establishing that they're correct are different jobs. The Verge reports that researchers have criticized OpenAI's releases for insufficient verification, inadequate attribution and explanations that are difficult to follow.
Those complaints aren't resistance to discovery. They're about being able to check what's being claimed.
Altman argues that humanity deserves fundamental scientific knowledge, while acknowledging OpenAI needs to communicate its findings better. Both points can stand: share potential discoveries, and give researchers enough detail to assess them.
The useful upside isn't replacing skepticism with applause. It's pairing fast exploration with careful checking.
A confident machine doesn't make verification optional. Neither does a very confident Slack channel.
Repost if your laboratory also needs a designated thinker.
Thanks for supporting Lil'meme. Your support is appreciated.
The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
The swagger is instant. Verification takes longer.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
AI generates possible reasoning fast. Researchers check whether it works.
The upside
Why it could matter
Share discoveries with enough detail to check them.
