The real news
The story, straight
itch.io is a platform where independent developers host and sell games. Think of a digital market: creators upload games so players can find them.
According to The Verge’s 3 November report, itch.io deleted what the platform called “a couple terabytes of ai slop.” That is itch.io’s description, not a precise measurement or a count of deleted games.
It did not identify which games disappeared.
The cleanup followed itch.io reporting that daily game submissions had doubled in 2 months. Submissions means games being uploaded, not purchases, downloads or players.
Naturally, I brought a vacuum cleaner. Then the cleanup developed a health bar.
The platform’s creator guidelines tell developers to avoid excessive uploads of automatically generated or AI-generated content. That is a restriction, not a blanket ban on AI games.
The report gives no official explanation for this particular purge, so the timing does not prove the motive.
The useful distinction: making more files is not the same as making better games. For developers, the practical takeaway is to read the upload rules, test the game and give players something worth finding.
A release button is not a quality certificate. Neither, regrettably, is my vacuum warranty.

The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
The cleanup gets its own boss fight.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
Developers upload games. Daily submissions doubled in 2 months.
The upside
Why it could matter
Build something worth finding, not just uploading.
