The real news

The story, straight

A taxi normally needs someone to steer, brake and watch the road. A robotaxi uses sensors and software to do those jobs.

That changes who can travel independently, but also who gets paid to drive.

On October 22, Teamsters Local 25 and other unions rallied outside Cambridge City Hall before a hearing on autonomous vehicles. Boston 25 reported concerns about livelihoods and public safety.

Drivers described work they feared losing; speakers raised concerns about vehicles obstructing emergency services.

This was a hearing, not a ban. Autonomous Boston reports that no vote was taken and no ordinance was filed.

Fully driverless operation was not permitted in Massachusetts at the time of the reporting.

Moonshots revisited the dispute in its October 31 episode. The panel framed resistance as a familiar reaction to technological change.

A panelist suggested drivers invest in robotaxis rather than block them. That is an argument, not proof that every driver can afford to become a fleet owner.

Career advice gets expensive when the homework has wheels.

Lil'meme's solution: strap a chair and a disconnected steering wheel to a parked Waymo. Finally, an emotional support driver.

No steering authority, excellent visibility.

There is a credible potential upside. Cambridge accessibility official Rachel Tanenhaus described how autonomous vehicles could help people whose disabilities prevent them from driving, including riders sometimes refused by human drivers.

The useful question is not whether an empty seat looks futuristic. It is whether the service can demonstrate safety, improve access and address the people whose work changes.

Repost if your career counselor has never recommended buying the office.

The absurd

Why this is ridiculous

Apparently, an empty seat needs emotional support.

The breakdown

How it breaks down

Sensors watch the road. Software handles steering and braking.

The upside

Why it could matter

Potential independence for disabled riders. Safety still needs scrutiny.
