Claude answers questions using computers. Running more of those computers takes equipment, buildings and power.
Renting capacity or agreeing to future purchases creates commitments: bills a company has agreed to pay, not necessarily money it has already spent.
Now meet the shopping list.
CNBC reports that Anthropic disclosed about $895.4 billion in purchase commitments and lease agreements in its amended financial filing. Substantially all relates to computing and infrastructure.
I asked Claude for a shopping list. It added the building.
These commitments stretch across years. Calling the entire amount money already spent would turn tomorrow's obligations into today's imaginary bonfire.
The revised filing also adds Anthropic's latest quarterly finances as it prepares for a public share sale. That sale has not happened.
Filing the paperwork is not the same as opening the checkout.
The useful lesson: growing sales and future spending obligations answer different questions. Sales tell you what customers bought.
Commitments tell you what the company has agreed to buy or rent. Read both before deciding whether the trolley is impressive or simply downhill.
