The real news

The story, straight

THORChain lets people exchange cryptocurrencies across different networks. Think of a currency counter that accepts your coins and delivers another kind elsewhere.

Then the counter gave change for money it never received.

THORChain says an Ethereum reorganization exposed a refund bug. A reorganization means the network replaces a recent block with a competing block, so a payment that looked complete can disappear from the accepted record.

Here, a 10 ETH deposit disappeared after THORChain had already credited it. The swap failed its price limit.

The system refunded against the missing deposit, and the sender's actual deposit was refunded too, producing an extra 10 ETH payout.

An automatic safety check detected the shortfall. Ethereum swaps stopped, and node operators paused swaps involving 10 networks.

Some other networks continued trading.

The accidental twist: according to Chainalysis, the pause may have inadvertently delayed laundering funds stolen from Binance. It interrupted access for ordinary users and the launderers alike.

This was not a targeted operation against hackers, and delayed money is not seized money.

THORChain had defended access without permission and resisted pressure to shut down over illicit funds. Its shutdown machinery was for network safety.

Then its own bug supplied the interruption.

Imagine defending the laundromat's open-door policy while the washing machine quietly resigns.

The useful lesson: automatic safety checks can catch a payment mismatch before normal operations continue. But a breakdown is not a substitute for a deliberate policy about stolen funds.

Nodes decide when chains are safe to reopen.

Repost for the washing machine that accidentally joined compliance.

The absurd

Why this is ridiculous

Chainalysis: the pause may have inadvertently delayed laundering.

The breakdown

How it breaks down

It swaps coins between networks. A refund bug paid out money never received.

The upside

Why it could matter

Automatic safety checks caught the shortfall.
