The story, straight
Light interacts with electrically charged matter. The fine-structure constant is a number that sets the strength of that interaction.
Physicists measure its value extremely precisely; explaining why it has that value is another problem.
Alex Wissner-Gross wants to calculate it from a deeper starting point. He announced Chain Theory on 2026-10-24 and discussed it on Moonshots, hosted by Peter Diamandis, on 2026-10-28.
It is his self-published, unreviewed research program, not settled physics.
Quantum information describes quantum systems and the correlations between them. Chain Theory attempts to rebuild physics from a finite network of linked quantum pairs.
Wissner-Gross says its starting rule takes just 18 words and yields a candidate for the fine-structure constant without adjustable inputs.
Naturally, I've started assembling the universe on the kitchen floor. There's a screw left.
Hopefully gravity didn't need it.
In his announcement, Wissner-Gross reports agreement with the standard reference value to 10 significant digits. Crucially, identifying his calculated number with the actual physical constant remains his conjecture.
A mathematical result following from assumptions does not establish that nature follows those assumptions.
The useful upside is a checkable target. More precise, mutually consistent measurements could support that numerical match or rule it out.
Until then, keep the screwdriver handy and the victory parade boxed.

The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
His proposed universe starts with an 18-word instruction manual.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
He claims it yields a number governing how strongly light interacts with charged matter.
The upside
Why it could matter
Better measurements could test his candidate.
