Apple's Launch Party Forgot Siri AI

The real news

The story, straight

Your iPhone's artificial intelligence isn't a tiny person living behind the glass. It's software that handles jobs such as rewriting text, translating conversations and understanding pictures.

Apple builds the models powering its Apple Intelligence features. Alibaba's Qwen can provide extra help for certain requests, like calling a tutor rather than replacing the student.

On 31 October 2026, Apple announced its first Apple Intelligence features for China, including Writing Tools, Live Translation and photo cleanup. Qwen support connects to Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence.

You choose whether to enable Qwen and what information to share. Alibaba says requests and responses won't be used to train its models.

Developer testing starts 4 November 2026. The public rollout is planned for December 2026 with iOS 27.3 on supported iPhones.

Here's the empty chair at the launch party: Apple explicitly says this update excludes Siri AI and the other next-generation Apple Intelligence features announced at its 2026 developer conference.

Lil'meme brought birthday candles. Apple brought useful tools and an optional guest brain.

The birthday boy remains absent from this particular party.

The upside isn't imaginary: translation, writing help and photo tools can be useful without pretending the next-generation Siri has arrived. Optional outside help is also different from silently replacing Apple's own models.
