A victims' forum is an online meeting place where people affected by an incident compare notes. If the attacker operates it, asking for help could mean handing more information to the person behind the harm.

Security experts told Kyodo that a forum for victims of the cyberattack on GMO Internet Group may have been set up by the attacker. They found similarities in its structure and parts of its code to the website used to claim responsibility.

This is suspicion based on technical clues, not a confession.

The forum was registered October 19. GMO announced the attack October 21.

The forum was confirmed available October 22. Registration isn't proof it was open before the announcement, but somebody had reserved the waiting room.

Experts say the attacker possibly sought information from victims. Kyodo does not establish that the forum collected it.

Separately, GMO confirmed customer information connected to its foreign exchange trading service, where people trade currencies, was leaked and used in fraudulent transactions.

The useful lesson: check a help site's operator through independently verified channels before posting private details. A sympathetic welcome is not proof of safety.
