The story, straight
Your bike can become worth more without putting money in your pocket. Until you sell it, the higher value isn't cash you can spend.
That distinction explains Strategy's latest earnings. The company holds bitcoin, a digital asset whose market price changes.
Its accounting updates those holdings to their current market value, recording the change as a gain or loss.
According to Unchained, Strategy reported $20.91 billion of operating income for the quarter ending September 30, 2026, driven by a $20.91 billion gain on digital assets. That gain reflected a higher bitcoin price at quarter end, not cash arriving from its business.
Excluding the gain, operations lost about $2.6 million.
The paper gain isn't imaginary. The holdings became more valuable.
But a higher valuation and money available to pay bills are different things.
Strategy also sold 5,552 bitcoin during the quarter to fund preferred dividends, payments to a class of shareholders, and repurchases of its STRC shares. Unchained reports it bought 7,218 bitcoin during the same period.

Apparently contactless payment requires more than making contact with a spreadsheet.
The useful takeaway: ask what created a profit, then check how cash moves. Market gains can reverse, too.
Despite the strong quarter, Strategy still reported a $1.89 billion operating loss across the 9 months through September 30.

How it breaks down
Bitcoin rising in value boosts reported profit without bringing cash in.
