The real news

The story, straight

Your phone can run software without asking another computer to do the work. Google's Project Suncatcher prototype satellite has now run an AI model in orbit and sent its answer back to Earth.

According to Google's October 30 update, engineers sent instructions through a ground station to Gemma 4, the AI model aboard the satellite. Its computer uses a TPU: a chip designed to do the calculations AI needs.

The assignment? Write a haiku about space.

Humanity put computing hardware in orbit and immediately enrolled it in creative writing.

Google says the satellite, launched October 1, returned the poem during a pass by Svalbard, Norway. The team subsequently tested space-themed limericks and prompts reporting the equipment's technical status.

Our imaginary Lil'meme is already trying to cram a grand piano into the satellite. Apparently, the poetry department has equipment requests.

The useful part isn't whether the poem deserves applause. Instructions went up, the onboard model produced an answer, and that answer came back.

Google calls it the first AI response from a data-center-class TPU in orbit.

That doesn't establish that an orbital computing network is ready. Google says heat and radiation tests come next, with twin interconnected satellites its next milestone in 2027.

The upside: a working response gives researchers a concrete result to build on. The encore still has to survive space.

Repost this before the satellite requests a dressing room.

The absurd

Why this is ridiculous

We sent up computing. We got a poet.

The breakdown

How it breaks down

A ground station sent instructions. The onboard AI generated poetry and transmitted it back.

The upside

Why it could matter

It worked. Heat and radiation tests come next.
