The real news

The story, straight

The modern crystal ball has apparently discovered Wi-Fi, a payment terminal and recurring revenue.

The Guardian reports that AI psychic apps offer chat, voice and video readings, horoscopes and palm analysis. Your AI Psychic sells coin packages from $9.99 for a quick question to $99.99 for ongoing guidance.

Human practitioners have begun putting "no AI" clauses in their ads, saying empathy, intuition and personal connection matter.

If you can see the future, a chatbot becoming your competitor should be a manageable surprise. In Lil'meme's imaginary fortune-teller booth, the crystal ball prints a pink "REPLACED BY AI" slip.

That's satire, not a report of anyone losing their job.

There is a serious issue beneath the joke. The Guardian describes concerns about AI readings passed off as human work, unclear data practices and people relying on chatbots for sensitive personal decisions.

Some practitioners warn that AI readings may worsen mental-health crises. Researcher Sally Applin notes that language models work from statistical patterns, while users supply much of the meaning themselves.

The AI service MystiCall says it aims to make symbolic readings more accessible for exploring emotions, not to predict the future or make diagnoses. That's a more defensible pitch than pretending a chatbot knows tomorrow.
