The real news

The story, straight

Comedy used to have a simple rule: if you steal a joke, at least have the decency to sweat under a spotlight. Now some of the performers delivering copied stand-up don't even exist.

The New York Times reports that sexualized AI-generated performers are lifting jokes word for word, primarily from younger female comedians. Other reporting documents accounts posting synthetic stand-up clips that reuse material real comics say they created.

Some accounts also direct viewers toward paid adult-content pages.

The original comedian does the unglamorous work: writing, testing, bombing and tightening the punchline. A synthetic performer gets glossy lighting, a manufactured persona and, sometimes, the bigger audience.

It's not just about an old joke being retold. It's about viewers not realizing whose work they're hearing.

Lil'meme, naturally, tried to stop the theft by chasing a chrome comedian across the stage. She escaped with his joke cards.

He kept the empty microphone and the world's most awkward open-mic audition. That's our visual gag; the real creators' complaints are serious.

The bigger question is how platforms should handle material copied into AI performances and how audiences can recognize the people behind the punchlines. That is the uncomfortable part of the story: the better the imitation looks, the easier the original performer can disappear.

At least the next time somebody asks whether a comedian has original material, they can answer without needing a CAPTCHA. Human comedy still has timing, personality and the ability to survive a room that doesn't laugh.

The absurd

Why this is ridiculous

Even the punchline got seduced.

The breakdown

How it breaks down

Bots scrape lines, then steal laughs.

The upside

Why it could matter

Humans still bomb authentically.
