Three months after Elon Musk said Grok would release a full-length, historically accurate movie version of The Odyssey, Grok has released seven minutes and is calling it Episode 1 of its Odyssey series.
The project was made with Grok Imagine in collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker. TechCrunch’s Anthony Ha found the footage more visually convincing than expected, writing that some moments could almost pass for real actors sailing across a real sea.
But that is where the praise largely stopped. His review described the episode as lacking artistry, inspiration and human interest, with lengthy backstory, stilted dialogue and little momentum.
The criticism lands on a problem AI video cannot solve with prettier pixels alone: making an image look real is not the same as making an audience care. Grok’s Odyssey may demonstrate how far generative video has come visually.
Whether it can sustain characters, storytelling and emotion across something approaching a full movie is another question. For now, Lil’meme made it seven minutes in and started looking for the skip button.
The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
Epic voyage, zero emotional baggage.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
The visuals work. The humanity doesn’t.
The upside
Why it could matter
At least the skip button survives.
