Elon Musk promised an AI-generated version of Homer’s The Odyssey before the end of 2026. Now the first seven-minute episode from Grok Imagine has arrived — and viewers have mostly responded with ridicule.
The episode was released on X as a creative collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker, both of whom specialize in AI filmmaking. It follows Odysseus preparing to sail for Troy, cuts through preparations and battle scenes, and shows Telemachus growing up and training for combat.
But the synthetic fingerprints are hard to miss. The Independent noted airbrushed skin, perfect teeth and the strange motion often associated with AI-generated video.
Only Odysseus is identified by name, potentially leaving viewers unfamiliar with Homer’s epic guessing who everyone else is.
That landed awkwardly after Musk had promised a full-length adaptation that would be historically accurate and faithful to Homer’s art. Viewers quoted by The Independent called the result poor and questioned whether AI filmmaking was anywhere close to replacing conventional movies.
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s theatrical adaptation has already become a major commercial hit, surpassing $1.7 billion globally.
Lil’meme’s verdict: AI can generate the voyage. Storytelling still has to steer the ship.
