The Mascot Finally Got a Remote Job
Hugo comes from Dynamic Creatures. The prototype is still remotely operated by a human. The mascot finally got a remote job.
The real news
The story, straight
Dynamic Creatures, a Cambridge startup, built Hugo: a fluffy purple character robot meant to greet, dance and hug guests at theme parks. It has 43 actuators - the moving parts that convert power into movement - which is why it can wave, dance and hold you.
Today a human is flying it on a remote. That hug is a very gentle puppet show.
The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
The robot still needs a human operator.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
Forty-three actuators make Hugo move.
The upside
Why it could matter
Theme-park characters could become genuinely interactive.
