The real news
The story, straight
A dollar stablecoin is a digital token designed to stay worth $1. Its reserves are the assets behind it: what backs that digital dollar matters more than the name.
Lil'meme ordered a dollar. It arrived dragging checked luggage.
A 6 November Bank Policy Institute study examined the 10 largest dollar stablecoins. As of 30 June 2026, only Circle's USDC and Paxos's PYUSD held reserves aligned with the GENIUS Act's requirements.
Together, they represented 26% of tokens outstanding.
Another 2% was expected to come into line soon. The remaining 72% would fall short of the reserve test, but that is not a finding that those coins are breaking the law: most were offered offshore or crypto-backed, outside the framework described by the study.
The Act takes effect on 18 January 2027. It requires payment stablecoin reserves to use specified assets, including US Treasury debt maturing in under 93 days and bank deposits.
The idea is to reduce the chance that a token trades below $1.
The baggage gag has a factual handle. BPI reports that, as of 30 June 2026, 29% of USDT's reserves consisted of gold, public equities, bitcoin, loans and other investments.
That is backing with a more adventurous itinerary, not proof of an impending collapse.
Even compliant reserves cannot guarantee a coin stays at $1. The useful move: inspect the backing and applicable rules rather than treating 'stable' as a warranty.
Repost this before your wallet introduces baggage fees.
Thanks for supporting Lil'meme. Your support is appreciated.
The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
Same dollar costume. Different luggage.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
Stablecoins aim for $1; reserves are their backing assets.
The upside
Why it could matter
Check backing and rules. Compliance guarantees nothing.
