A coin you own can rise in price without putting cash in your pocket. Until you sell, that increase is an unrealized gain: your holding is worth more, but you haven't collected the difference.

Hyperliquid Strategies holds HYPE, the token of the Hyperliquid blockchain. Its 5 November company release reports $620.6 million net income for the quarter ended 30 September 2026, driven by $803.0 million in net unrealized HYPE gains.

That's not $620.6 million arriving from customers. Lil'meme is trying to buy coffee with a screenshot.

The payment terminal has declined his artistic interpretation of money.

The company reported $13.3 million in revenue: $12.3 million from staking and validator commissions, rewards and fees associated with helping operate the network, plus $1.0 million in interest. It also recorded a $172.3 million income-tax provision.

Paper gains don't make the tax accounting disappear.

This isn't a company with no cash: it reported $254.6 million in cash and cash-like instruments at quarter-end, alongside $3,505.3 million in HYPE holdings.

A subsidiary has applied to become a futures commission merchant, a regulated business that could carry US client trading accounts. The proposed permissioned Hyperliquid markets would restrict participation.

Both the application and those markets remain subject to regulatory approval; neither timing nor outcome is assured.

The useful lesson: separate rising asset values from revenue and cash. Unsold gains can reverse.

A spreadsheet can show wealth; it cannot guarantee spending money.
