DNA GETS CARDED

The real news

The story, straight

DNA is a string of chemical instructions used by living cells. Researchers can order synthetic strings from suppliers.

Screening checks who is buying and what sequence they want before those instructions become physical material.

Now the White House is tying federal life-sciences funding to purchases from certified suppliers that verify customers and screen sequences. Its November 5 policy, NSTM-6, directs agencies to introduce standards and purchasing requirements on a timetable.

It is not a new law, and it does not cover labs without federal money.

SafeAI watch reports that the policy replaces guidance relying on suppliers' self-attestation with independent verification. Think less “trust me, bro” at the molecular checkout.

On Moonshots, the panel frames screening physical DNA orders as the less-bad bottleneck: intervene where something gets made, rather than police what people think. That is their judgment, not proof the system will work perfectly.

Lil'meme's version is a nightclub bouncer refusing entry to a molecule. Ridiculous scene; useful distinction.

The potential upside is checking risky purchases without treating every curious thought as contraband.
