A paywall is a locked door for articles: readers pay to get inside. A web crawler is software that visits pages and collects information.
Giving it a login can let it through that door.
Ars Technica says Meta's proposed business terms required publishers to create test credentials so its bots could bypass paywalls. Keeping a business Facebook page meant accepting crawling of linked sites, with no opt-out.
That's not just a spare-key request. That's asking you to cut the key yourself.
On 6 November 2026, Meta told Reuters it was pausing the changes; existing terms remain in effect. The update had been due on 20 November, after an earlier delay.
Ars reports preliminary court orders in Norway and Brazil and a UK competition investigation. Those aren't final judgments.
Meta says this was about accurate product information for recommendations, not news scraping or AI training, and says its crawling practices are unchanged. Training intent is disputed; don't mistake the joke for an admission.
The useful lesson: a website login is access, not paperwork. Read what permissions an account requires.
The changes are paused, not permanently withdrawn. Even my rocket has brakes.
Hardships are coming. I, the Big Dreamer, created this token to help the people.
I truly do see this token going up in value. Ride the rocket with me and let's see where the next 24 months take us.
