A crypto wallet uses secret credentials to approve transfers. Someone who gets those secrets can move its funds.
Think of a house key, except the furniture can disappear over the internet.
Former FBI supervisor Patrick Steven Yaroch pleaded guilty to wire fraud and money laundering after stealing cryptocurrency using wallet credentials collected in FBI investigations, according to Bitcoin Magazine's report on the Justice Department announcement.
Prosecutors said the plea covers about $2.47 million, roughly 100 fraudulent transfers and credentials tied to 35 investigations. He moved cryptocurrency into wallets he controlled, then made further transactions intended to hide its source and ownership.
Protect and serve. Apparently the missing word was yourself.
Court records say Yaroch asked ChatGPT where to live in the European Union. It suggested Portugal.
Even the retirement planning had outsourced supervision.
This wasn't a magic attack that broke cryptocurrency. The access meant to help investigators became the means of stealing funds.
Prosecutors said his conduct compromised investigations and FBI sources and methods.
He faces up to 20 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for March 4, 2027; he has not been sentenced.
The useful lesson: restrict who can access wallet credentials and independently check transfers. A badge identifies an employee.
It doesn't make every transaction trustworthy.
