A web request is a message asking a website for something. Its User-Agent header is a software name tag, sometimes including contact details.

It is not supposed to become an unsolicited business card for the person using the software.

Claude Code is Anthropic's AI coding assistant. Anthropic staff member Lydia Hallie explained on Hacker News, in a reply quoted in GitHub issue 107757, that account emails were supplied to the model to reduce invented author names.

When Claude wrote its own web commands, it sometimes included that email as a contact address.

Version 2.1.317 introduced protection that asks before certain web or shell calls send the account email. The built-in privacy protection is enabled by default, but Hallie said it does not catch every case, including scripts Claude writes and runs itself.

That is a bouncer at the front door while the windows remain a discussion topic.

Hallie announced account-email removal from the model's context for a release expected early the following week. That announcement is not confirmation it shipped.

The thread does not prove this caused the reporter's spam.

The useful lesson: inspect what generated commands and scripts send, not just what they download. Your assistant knowing your email is not permission to introduce you.
