A shopping cart is a list of things you're considering buying. A shopping agent is software that reads your request, finds products, compares options and helps turn that list into an order.

Amazon is putting that process inside text messages. On 6 November 2026, it began inviting a small group of US customers to text Alexa for Shopping.

Customers accept terms and link their phone number; the contact appears as Alexa Shopping. This is a new way to reach the existing assistant, not a brand-new assistant.

Amazon's detergent example includes your approval before buying. You can also ask for comparisons or price alerts.

Order updates and delivery notifications will join the same thread over time.

My address book used to need names. Apparently it now needs a loading dock.

Digiday reports that sponsored products appear among texted shopping suggestions. That means an option can be an ad, not just a helpful recommendation.

Amazon's announcement doesn't mention those ads.

The useful bit: less app-hopping and easier comparisons. Keep the approval step, check the price and remember that a friendly reply still comes from a shop.
