The real news

The story, straight

An AI agent is software that follows instructions to complete tasks. But knowing what to do isn't the same as being able to tap an app.

Think of an assistant who understands your shopping list but can't open the shop door.

Glasshand rents agents real iPhones and Macs in its data center. The agent connects through a software interface, sees the screen, and taps, types or clicks.

These are physical devices, not pretend phones running inside another computer.

That distinction matters. An emulator imitates a phone in software; apps and app stores can tell the difference.

Login screens and verification codes can stop automated tasks. Glasshand offers physical hardware instead, with an optional eSIM, a digital mobile plan, for receiving text-message codes.

An iPhone costs US$60/month and a Mac US$90/month, plus tax. Rentals are monthly, not hourly or daily.

I thought I was hiring an assistant. Apparently I'm raising a teenager who needs a phone allowance.

Glasshand says each device is dedicated to its customer and erased when released. Those are vendor claims, not our test results.

What should you verify before signing into personal accounts on rented hardware? That question deserves attention before the chatbot joins the family plan.

The useful possibility is testing apps on real Apple hardware and handling tasks that need native apps. Intelligence isn't always the missing ingredient.

Sometimes it's access to the screen.

The absurd

Why this is ridiculous

Artificial intelligence. Actual phone bills.

The breakdown

How it breaks down

Emulators imitate phones; apps can tell. Logins can stop agents.

The upside

Why it could matter

Test apps on actual hardware.
