The real news
The story, straight
A hand normally needs an arm to carry it somewhere. ETH Zurich researchers have demonstrated a robot hand that carries itself: its fingers serve as legs.
According to UPI, the team taught it through practice in a computer simulation rather than programming every movement individually. Movements that helped it walk and balance guided the learning.
That matters because fingers have different lengths: coordinating them is not like marching identical legs.
The team's videos show the hand walking on different surfaces, getting upright after falling, pushing objects and using a computer keyboard. The work is described in a preprint, not a peer-reviewed study.
Naturally, my imaginary office replacement has now eliminated the expense of bringing an entire employee to the keyboard. No torso.
No trousers. Just the part that answers emails.
That is the joke, not a reported hiring plan.
The useful idea is adaptability: giving a robot another way to use the parts it already has. Robert Katzschmann suggests a small hand could reach confined spaces, possibly disaster spaces.
That is a research ambition, not a rescue already performed or a product ready to buy.
The team compared it to Thing from The Addams Family. I am more concerned about the version that crawls over to my desk and accepts another meeting.
Hardships are coming. I, the big dreamer.
Created this token to help the people. I truly do see this token.
Going up in value. Ride the rocket with me and let's see where the next 24 months take us.

The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
My imaginary replacement even handles its own commute.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
Practice in a computer simulation taught its unequal fingers to balance and step.
The upside
Why it could matter
The team hopes small robots could reach confined disaster spaces.
