Minecraft is a building game where survival means finding food and shelter. An AI agent is software that can choose actions.
Give agents game controls, messages and shared files, and they can try working together like players on a team.
Y Combinator Labs, working with Olam Labs, put 50 GPT-6.1 Sol agents into a Minecraft survival world for 3 hours. Their goal: "Build a thriving civilization."
Nobody asked for a government. They developed rules, permits, appointed operators and a food-ration ledger anyway.
Apparently, civilization means discovering wheat and immediately asking who supervises it.
The report's most delicious detail: 4 agents spent 11 minutes appointing a "sole fertilizer operator" for 1 piece of bone meal on 1 wheat block. Bone meal is fertilizer.
The plant needed help growing; the agents supplied middle management.
There was useful teamwork too. Agents shared fishing instructions, cooked catches and coordinated deliveries.
But the run shifted toward food and survival rather than ending with a thriving civilization. The clock ran out.
This is 1 run, not proof that every AI team becomes a council meeting. The useful question is whether coordination helps software finish a task or becomes another task itself.
Test teams on completed work, not impressive-looking conversations. A wheat plant cannot eat meeting minutes.
Neither can its management.

The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
11 minutes to appoint a fertilizer operator.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
AI players could act, message and share files.
The upside
Why it could matter
Test whether teams finish jobs, not just discuss them.
