The story, straight
A ballot usually asks who you want. Alaska's Senate ballot also rewards reading past the surname.
Alaska uses ranked-choice voting: voters put candidates in preference order. If nobody gets more than 50% of first choices, the last-place candidate drops out.
Those ballots move to their next remaining choice. Repeat until a candidate has a majority.
Now meet the cast. CBS News reports that incumbent Dan S. Sullivan and retired teacher Daniel J. Sullivan are among 4 Senate candidates, alongside Mary Peltola and Gerald Heikes.
The ballot distinguishes the Sullivans by their names, party information and the incumbent label. They are not printed identically.
Republicans have a radio jingle: “Dan S., Daniel, Gerry – just don't rank Mary!”
A Senate race, with instructions you can hum. Lil'meme is rocking an oversized ballot to sleep because apparently democracy now needs a lullaby.
An Alaska elections official initially excluded Daniel J. Sullivan, citing an effort to confuse voters. A judge overturned that decision, finding the state lacked authority to judge a candidacy's good faith.
Alaska's Supreme Court upheld the ruling.
The useful takeaway isn't that a rhyme should pick your senator. Read the full names and labels, then rank according to your preferences.
A memorable chorus is not a substitute for knowing who's on the ballot.
Repost this before your ballot gets a bedtime album.

The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
Republican radio jingle: “Dan S., Daniel, Gerry – just don't rank Mary!”
The breakdown
How it breaks down
Rank candidates. If nobody gets over 50%, last place drops out; ballots move to their next remaining choice.
The upside
Why it could matter
Read the full names, not just Sullivan.
