The real news
The story, straight
An airliner carries passengers. A power turbine makes electricity: burning gas spins machinery connected to a generator.
Boom Supersonic is developing both. Only the passengers need passports.
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby says Boom's Overture supersonic airliner won't make its 2029 timeline. Speaking on Office Hours: Business Edition, he said: "It's not going to happen in '29 — it's going to take longer."
That's a customer's assessment, not a confirmed delay announcement from Boom. Kirby did not dismiss the program.
Meanwhile, Boom has unveiled a Colorado factory for Superpower, its 42-megawatt natural gas turbine aimed at AI data centres. Those facilities run computers that need electricity.
Boom targets initial customer deliveries for mid-2027; that is a target, not a completed delivery.
I packed for Paris. Apparently my destination is a chatbot's electricity bill.
The connection isn't just a corporate detour: Boom says the turbine and aircraft engine share technology and manufacturing capabilities. Founder Blake Scholl says Superpower revenue and profits can help finance the aircraft.
The useful upside: another business could help pay for flight development. The limit: selling electricity equipment doesn't certify a passenger jet.
No Overture prototype has been completed.
