The real news

The story, straight

A workplace unfair dismissal claim asks whether a sacking was unjust. But the application must get through the filing deadline before the dispute can be heard.

BBC News reports that an Italian chef fired from Brisbane's now-closed La Costa restaurant had refused to put pineapple on pizza, calling it an insult to his culture. The refusal was among several workplace complaints, not the whole case.

Other concerns included foul language, communication and escalating frustration.

According to the ruling as reported by the BBC, this was his 3rd pineapple refusal in 4 years. His application to the Fair Work Commission failed because it was filed too late.

That was not a ruling that the dismissal was fair, or that pineapple belonged on pizza.

The absurd backdrop: Queensland produces all Australia's commercially grown pineapples. A cultural red line, in pineapple country, met a filing deadline.

The calendar wasn't taking substitutions.

Useful takeaway: check filing deadlines early when challenging a dismissal. Winning the argument at dinner doesn't get the paperwork through the door.
