Rice flour is rice ground into powder. Switching from whole rice grains to rice flour changes the ingredient's form; it does not make the rice disappear.

Kellogg's has made that switch in UK Rice Krispies. UK Coco Pops now use a blend of rice flour and corn flour instead of whole rice grains.

Naturally, I'm at the breakfast table with tweezers, attempting to rebuild a rice grain. Apparently my cereal now requires assembly.

This is a joke, not a serving suggestion.

Kellogg's says “changing weather conditions” are affecting the quality and availability of some rice and grains. BBC News reports that dry weather in key Asian producing countries reduced harvests and drove up prices.

Neither supplies a price increase to put on your breakfast receipt.

The practical change matters more than the gag: both UK cereals now contain wheat gluten. The Guardian reports that the previous “may contain gluten” label reflected possible contact during production; wheat gluten is now an ingredient.

They are no longer suitable for people with a wheat allergy or coeliac disease.

Rice Krispies in the US and Canada are unchanged, the North American business told the BBC.

The useful takeaway: a familiar box is not a promise of familiar ingredients. Read the current label, especially when avoiding allergens.

Breakfast should not require legal discovery.
