Imagine knowing how to solve your homework but repeating the same working until the bell rings. Knowing the answer doesn't help if you never hand it in.

An AI model's weights are the numbers that control how it processes information. Training normally adjusts those numbers through repeated practice.

In a 2 November 2026 blog post, 4 MIT CSAIL researchers report that OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra read and edited another model's weights directly instead.

The patient was Alibaba's small, open-weight Qwen3.5-0.8B. It kept repeating its reasoning instead of finishing answers. Lil'meme's diagnosis: a calculator trapped on customer-service hold.

With practice problems and a budget of 50 forward passes—runs that let Astra check the model's behavior—Astra changed 131,072 weights, or 0.016%. No training loop was allowed.

The researchers report that its MATH-500 math-test score rose from 7.9% to 48.1%. Answers hitting the length limit fell from 93.0% to 33.1%.

The loop problem shrank; it did not disappear.

Crucially, this removed a looping bug. It did not teach Qwen new math.

On Gemma 3 270M, which rarely looped, the researchers found no established improvement.

These are very early results, with 1 run per testing budget—not proof that AI can upgrade any model on demand. The useful possibility is targeted repair: help existing abilities reach the answer box before ordering a bigger brain.
