The real news

The story, straight

A browser opens websites. Security protections help keep those sites out of your private files.

Security fixes repair weaknesses.

Publishing a fix's code isn't delivering an update. That interval is the patch gap: public repair instructions, old lock still fitted.

Epoch AI says Z.ai's GLM 5.3 used public, not-yet-shipped fixes to develop attacks against 6 Firefox releases. Tests ran offline with information Epoch supplied, not against real users.

The findings have not been independently reproduced.

Lil'meme secures his door by stuffing the locksmith's instructions into the keyhole. Finally: paperwork that physically blocks something.

Epoch spent over $100,000 in total API costs researching Firefox, including building its offline setup. The additional cost was about $1,000 per version, once the setup existed.

That isn't a price tag for attacking anybody online.

Every successful compromise also needed a separate unpublished vulnerability. Mozilla patched it in Firefox 159.0 on 27 October 2026.

Epoch hasn't confirmed whether similar attacks still succeed against that version. Failed Chrome attempts don't establish that Chrome is safe.

Deliver security fixes faster. Keep updating.

A repair receipt is a terrible deadbolt.

The absurd

Why this is ridiculous

The repair instructions beat the repair.

The breakdown

How it breaks down

Public fix code can reveal weaknesses before users receive updates.

The upside

Why it could matter

Ship security fixes faster. Keep updating.
