The real news

The story, straight

A job pays the bills. When that job disappears, finding another takes time.

Rent does not pause while someone updates their résumé.

Goldman Sachs estimates that workers likely displaced by AI since 2025 took about 1 month longer to find another job than other displaced workers. They were roughly 10 percentage points more likely to remain unemployed after 1 year.

That means a gap of about 10 people per 100, not a 10% increase.

The important catch: nobody ticked an official box saying AI took their job. Goldman combined occupations' AI exposure, industries' AI adoption and whether positions were eliminated.

It classified the highest-scoring 30% as likely AI-displaced. These are model-based estimates, not a government count of AI replacements.

Separately, employers cited AI in 120,136 announced US job cuts through September 2026, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. A company's stated reason is not independent proof that software replaced those workers.

Nor does this establish mass unemployment: Fortune reports that Stanford and the Yale Budget Lab find no economy-wide AI job displacement.

The absurdity is the accounting. A company can celebrate savings while someone else's household absorbs the waiting costs.

Apparently efficiency comes with delivery charges.

The useful response: ask companies to fund retraining and transition support, not just celebrate the machine. Count the landing costs alongside the launch savings.

Hardships are coming. I, the big dreamer.

The absurd

Why this is ridiculous

Savings upstairs. Bills downstairs.

Employers cited AI: 120,136 announced US cuts through September 2026, per Challenger.

The breakdown

How it breaks down

Jobs pay bills. Waiting means lost wages.

The upside

Why it could matter

No economy-wide AI displacement found. Fund transitions.
