The real news
The story, straight
A remote-controlled car moves when somebody elsewhere steers it. Tau Robotics applies a similar idea to cleaning: human pilots watch through cameras in humanoid robots' heads and wrists and guide their movements.
For tasks such as folding laundry, robots copy movements performed by their pilots.
Your toilet hasn't escaped human labor. Human labor just found a way to work remotely.
Writing in MIT Technology Review, Grace Huckins describes hiring Tau's service in San Francisco. Her robot wore a Tau Robotics shirt and grippy socks and used claw hands.
It struggled with stairs, but a later visit included successfully cleaning her toilet.
The most revealing breakdown happened elsewhere: heat shut down the human controller's viewing equipment, ending an early visit. The robot wasn't the overheated part.
Apparently, even bathroom duty now depends on somebody else's computer.
This isn't a fully independent robot cleaner. Tau's cofounder says some tasks, including vacuuming and mopping, can already run without human help; the service still relies on remote pilots.
The useful part is the practice. Cleaning supplies real examples that Tau uses to train its models toward working without an operator.
That's the goal, not a finished achievement. Today's remote toilet shift could help tomorrow's robot learn the job.
