The real news

The story, straight

A news presenter delivers a story. Journalists gather information; editors check it.

Giving the presenter a human-looking robot body doesn't make that body the reporter.

On 5 November 2026, Xinhua, China's state news agency, unveiled 2 life-size robot news anchors at the World Media Summit in Beijing. Named Xinyu and Xinyan, they were built with UBTECH Robotics.

Film director Zhang Yimou led their appearance design.

Xinhua calls them the world's first bionic humanoid robot news anchors. That's the agency's claim, not an independently verified record.

Here, bionic means machinery made to resemble a living human, including artificial skin.

Their news comes through Xinhua Yudian, Xinhua's own AI news system and vetted collection of material. Xinhua says the robots will assist staff, not independently write the news.

Journalists and editors remain responsible.

The comic scene: Lil'meme arrives to do the anchors' makeup, discovers a camera lens where a pupil should be, and switches to a window squeegee. Finally, broadcast cosmetics with a rinse cycle.

The useful distinction is between presentation and reporting. A convincing face can deliver information; it cannot prove that information is accurate.

The public unveiling also isn't an independent test of performance through a full newsday.

Judge the sources and editorial checks, not the cheekbones. Like or repost if your beauty kit now needs a bucket.

Makeup meets window cleaning.

The breakdown

How it breaks down

Robots present vetted news; humans stay responsible.

The upside

Check sources, not cheekbones.
