The story, straight
You can ask someone to shop for you. An AI agent is software that can do that job: look for products and take actions on your behalf.
But your digital helper still needs permission to enter the shop and buy anything.
That is where the future meets the velvet rope.
CNBC reports that Billions Network and affiliated company AmanTrue audited 51 large US retailers' published access rules. Only 11 had taken a deliberate position on AI agents.
5 explicitly restricted them, including Amazon, Kohl's and Neiman Marcus. Another 37 blocked shopping agents largely by accident through older rules written for scrapers, software that automatically collects website content.
None offered a verified agent a route to complete a purchase.
Important: these were published rules, not tests of what the websites actually enforce. The audit does not establish that all 51 stores physically block agents.
Lil'meme's solution is to give his phone a fake moustache. Apparently the final frontier of artificial intelligence is looking like someone who panic-buys scented candles.
Security is a real part of the problem: businesses need to establish who an agent represents and what it is allowed to do. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon cited security risks for blocking outside agents acting for retail customers.
Not everyone is closing the door. Walmart announced it is opening to customers' preferred agents.
The useful next step: verify the helper, limit its permissions and keep the customer in control. Shopping assistance should save you work, not require a disguise.

The absurd
Why this is ridiculous
Personal shopper. Personally unwelcome.
The breakdown
How it breaks down
Agents shop for you. Old bot rules can shut them out.
The upside
Why it could matter
Verify the shopper. Keep the human in control.
