Fraud Documentary Beats Batman Villain

The story, straight

You buy a cinema ticket to watch somebody else's problems. This weekend, the problems came with a business plan.

“You Can See Everything,” the Elizabeth Holmes documentary directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, reached No. 1 in North America for the first time. AP reports estimated third-weekend ticket sales of $10.6 million, narrowly ahead of “Clayface” at an estimated $10.4 million.

Final figures are due Monday.

Clayface is a Batman villain. Holmes founded Theranos and was convicted of defrauding investors.

Hollywood invented a monster; reality brought supporting documents.

Here's the machinery behind the story. Blood tests help doctors learn what's happening inside your body.

Theranos claimed its device could perform extensive testing from a fingerstick rather than a vein draw. According to the Justice Department, it could perform only a few basic tests.

Imagine selling a revolutionary toaster while secretly ordering the toast from next door. Except this wasn't breakfast, and the deception had real victims.

The documentary's ticket sales don't prove everyone bought a ticket for the same reason. But a film about Holmes topping a fictional villain is an encouraging reminder: examining hype can attract an audience, too.
