The real news

The story, straight

A constitution sets the rules for government. A constitutional court checks whether laws follow them.

Its judges help enforce limits on political power.

Shortly after midnight on 31 October, President Karol Nawrocki pushed through people at Warsaw's Constitutional Tribunal entrance, including judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, POLITICO reports.

Responsibility for the confrontation is disputed. Judge Maciej Berek accused Nawrocki of physically confronting Korwin-Piotrowska.

Presidential aide Rafał Leśkiewicz said judges obstructed and manhandled the president. These are competing accounts, not our verdict.

Parliament elects judges; the president swears them in. Nawrocki refused some elected by the majority backing Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

They took oaths in parliament instead, which Nawrocki considers invalid. Court president Bogdan Święczkowski barred them from hearing cases.

Getting through the entrance settles none of those legal questions.

In our visual joke, Lil'meme arrives wearing shoulder pads. His courtroom dress code needed a sports supplement.

The takeaway: separate footage from legal authority. A doorway cannot issue a judgment.
