A crosswalk gives people a marked place to cross the road. Drivers need to notice someone crossing and be ready to stop.

Petaluma police checked that basic skill with a person wearing an inflatable yellow chicken costume.

Think pedestrian-safety test, but the teaching assistant has oversized orange feet.

According to Olivia Richman's Yahoo report, most drivers passed: police said they drove at safe speeds and gave pedestrians the right of way. Several drivers who were pulled over said they hadn't seen the chicken.

That's what they told officers, not a measurement of what their eyes could detect.

The costume was nearly as tall as a person, bright yellow, with a red comb. In my imaginary investigation, I'm examining it through a magnifying glass.

The operation happened ahead of Halloween. Police did not report how many drivers they stopped or whether they issued tickets.

Nobody was hurt; this was a pedestrian-safety check, not a chicken crime scene.

The useful part isn't a new wardrobe requirement for walkers. Police urged drivers to slow down near crossings and check both sides.

Pedestrians should use marked crossings and make sure approaching drivers notice them before stepping out. Ordinary people shouldn't need poultry packaging to get attention.
